Let us introduce ourselves
Somyong (Noi) Sukkij learned how to cook for her family in an outdoor kitchen in the little farming village of Sichompoo, Khon Kaen – located in the Northeastern area of Thailand (Issan). Noi was the first person in her family to attend high school and college, and she came to the U.S. with 200 bucks in her pocket and a drive to succeed.
In 2013, she took over management of this little spot on the Drag, which had been serving Thai food & sushi under several different owners and names since 2008.
By mid-year, 2013 Noi took over ownership and began to think about how she might change the name of the restaurant. She wanted to include the “Hi, How Are You?” theme of the famous Jeremiah the Frog (“Hi, How Are You”) mural on the wall of the 21st street side of the building.
After connecting with artist Daniel Johnston and his family, she changed the name to Thai, How Are You?in 2014. She introduced the new brand and a new menu to go with it – updating many of the the old favorites – and adding some of her own!
Noi welcomes you to her restaurant and is proud to be the most recent caretaker of this Austin landmark!
